No Time to Die Review

No Time to Die Review

No time to die is pretty good movie and a fitting send off to Daniel Craig’s Bond. For the most part I enjoyed the movie and I think it largely succeeds as a final act for Daniel Craigs Bond and gives the character a satisfying ending. The movie ain’t perfect, it's very long and I think the pacing ends up feeling a bit weird due to a time gap. At times it feels like a bit of a pastiche of a Bond film, there are a ton of Bond’isms that feel like they are in the film just to tick off a list of reinforce the brand. But overall the movie works, there are some good pay offs to prior films, it’s a great last ride for Craig and very good satisfying send off for his iteration of James Bond.

Shang Chi Review

Shang Chi Review

I had been looking forward to Shang Chi for quite a while going by the trailers it definitely looked like something new yet it harkened back to the old MCU intro movies. Shang Chi is the first MCU solo introduction film we have gotten in quite a long time, 2019's Captain Marvel was the last one we got and while we did get Black Widow earlier this year we have known that character since Iron man 2. Notably Shang Chi is the first time we have seen a majority Asian cast in the MCU and while I don’t think it's as ground breaking a moment as Black Panther was its still really nice to see and It does for young Asian kids what Black Panther did for young black kids or what having Rey be the main character of the Star Wars sequel trilogy did for young girls. Though it is important to acknowledge that while it's great to see a majority Asian cast, Asians are not a monolith, Shang Chi is mostly influenced by Chinese culture which in itself is not a monolith and that Asian cast is mostly a Chinese though Awkwafina is half Korean and another major Character is of Indian decent. Anyway aside from that I was really looking forward to seeing the movie and boom a lockdown here in Auckland a few weeks before release, so it's been a long time coming. Luckily the movie has come to Disney+ early and we are able to watch it in IMAX format which is pretty cool and the wait was worth it cause I found Shang Chi to a be a pretty good movie.

Free Guy Review

Free Guy Review

Free Guy is a Sci Fi action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds as "Guy" an NPC in a GTA Style online video game who discovers that he is an NPC in a video game though unlike his fellow NPCs he has the agency to do what he wants. The secondary narrative focuses on Jodie Comer(Killing Eve) character a video game developer looking for evidence that the open world game "Free City" was based on stolen code from an earlier project that she and Joe Keery's (Stranger things) character worked on, with Taika Waititi as the bad Guy Antwan owner of the developer that makes "Free City". Free Guy alternates between the real and game world while also featuring appearance by some real world gamers/streamers like Ninja and Pokimane because of course it would.

I thought Free Guy was pretty decent, it’s a pretty earnest movie which is mainly tied up Ryan Reynolds "Guy" who is a very upbeat, positive character and as things progress that positivity starts to rub off on the rest of the cast. As much as this movie is about this video game it ends up being more about the relationships between these characters and how "Guy" influences them. I can't help but compare this to the other Ryan Reynolds movie that came out earlier this year The Hitman's Wife Body Guard and apart from having a much more manageable movie tittle I think this movie works a lot better, Reynolds portrays somewhat similar characters but Free Guy makes much better use of him and has a more cohesive story. While free guy is not an R movie so can't get away with as much outrageous jokes it still makes a good effort and if your familiar with video game tropes then yeah this movie does a decent job poking fun at those as well.

What surprised me the most about this movie was the scale of it, the trailer show this Free City which is heavily inspired by GTA and GTA typically has a giant scope. We don’t see much of the "Free City" save for a couple blocks and areas in the city, there is no Blaine County or San Fierro, Free City seems to be based on NYC and IRL is also set in an NYC-esque area as well. The movie usually does a decent job of differentiating between IRL and "Free City" though some of the outdoor locations especially look similar. This extends to the cast, IRL characters are represented in game by the same actors but its only realty Jodie Comer's character Millie Rusk/Molotovgirl that we see frequent both often. This is not necessarily a bad thing while scope feels smaller it does give the movie more time to focus on its characters and tell a more intimate story that will appeal to more people. Somewhat similar to Spielberg's Ready player One, while "Free City" like the Oasis is a central part of the movie the story is about people and whether that’s our IRL characters or the self-aware NPC Guy.

Facilitated by its video game setting we get action sometimes very over the top as can be afforded by such as setting. I would say this is much more of a comedy then an action movie but we do get some set pieces, plenty of scenes with cars and guns similar to what you may see in GTA Online including video game logic. Aside from the cameos mentioned, there are some people and things who pop up who you may not expect. Taika's Antwon is a pretty fun villain, you don’t see him a ton but for when you do see him he steals the show. Ryan Reynolds "Guy" is definitely more in fine with Reynolds dorky/comedic characters and for this movie it works really well.

Overall I found Free Guy to be a decent movie the scope of the film was smaller than I expected but it turns out pretty good. Video game movie don’t have the best history and if we are gonna count this as a video game movie I would say its one of the better ones. It's not high art cinema, but it's pretty endearing and I think most people will enjoy it. If you have Disney+ and have liked Ryan Reynolds comedic roles in the past then definitely check this out.

The Suicide Squad Review

The Suicide Squad Review

The premise of The Suicide Squad is not too dissimilar from its predecessor, a team of super villains are sent on a mission for the US government in exchange for reduced sentences, these missions tend to be very dangerous hence the name Suicide Squad. In this film we see Task Force X (official US Govt name) sent to a fictional South American country for a mission that eventually pits the steam against a giant alien starfish called Starro I don’t want to give too much away other than the Suicide Squad lives up to its name.

F9 Review

F9 Review

F9 is the latest movie in the Fast and Furious Franchise, a franchise that I’m always in awe of how its transitioned from a series about street racing to well whatever it is now basically the avengers in cars. F9 picks up a few years after F8 where we see Dom come out of retirement to deal with his long lost brother who has reappeared and shenanigans ensue.

Toy Story 4 Review

Toy story is a very interesting franchise, the first movie is a landmark film being the first Pixar movie, catapulting them to prominence, the first fully computer animated movie it was even nominated for a few Oscars. Then you have the sequel, Pixar's first sequel and another critical darling. It seemed like that was it and Pixar seemed to have moved on then 10 years later you get Toy Story 3, critical darling, nominated for a ton of awards and seemingly the end of a trilogy. If you grew up with Toy Story like myself then the initial 3 movies have seemingly played out in real time, Toy Story 3 came out during my first year of University and it really resonated with me. So when toy Story 4 was announced I really did not know what to expect. There were some loose ends namely Bo Peep but overall I felt 3 was a very satisfactory ending. The good news is Toy Story 4 is a really good movie.

Forky and Woody

Forky and Woody

Toy Story 4 picks up a few months or possibly a year so after the conclusion of toy Story 4. Andy's Toys are enjoying their new life with Bonnie though Woody is having a bit of a hard time adjusting isn't really over loosing Andy. During the course of the movie Bonnie creates Forky a toy make of a Spork and the Toys find themselves on a road trip visiting a small town with a carnival, Forky gets Lost, Woody goes after him and shenanigans ensue. Its at this town where we see the return of Bo Peep. We get a flash back to Bo Peeps departure and while sad it isn't the first 10 mins of UP. Toy Story 4 asks some big questions especially about the nature of living Toys though it does not really go too deep. At its core its Woody's story as he learns to deal with his new place in the world while also being offered an alternative with the return of Bo Peep.

Most of the original cast return, though unfortunately due to some of the cast dying over the years Andy's toys are somewhat sidelined in this movie in favor of the new comer toys found in the town. Standout newcomer is Tony hale's Forky who has some of that Buster DNA. Apart from  that Tom hanks is good as always, Annie Potts as Bo Beep gets a greatly expanded role and while Tim Allen's Buzz is good he kind of gets sidelined a bit with a bit of weird side story. Christina Hendricks as Gabby Gabby is the main villain though refreshingly things are a bit more grey in this movie. Key and Peele are in the movie with a pretty funny Gimmick and Keanu Reeves  is in this because 2019 is the year of Keanu.

Toy Story 4 is much more of an Adventure movie similar to the first 2 as opposed to 3 which ended up being partially a heist movie. The setting is quite cool especially the carnival which is very visually interesting and creates all those specular highlights you see on the posters/marketing material. The antiques shop is also quite cool with a lot of interesting things are you may expect. The movie does not look too different from three aside from the specular highlights.

Overall Toy Story 4 is a very good movie, it’s a fitting end/epilogue to the Toy Story "Story" for now and is much better than it deserves to be. Personally I feel Toy Story 3 is a better, more final, more poignant ending. 3 was an ending for the Toys, for Andy and even the Sid cameo gave more finality for it. For me Toy Story 4 plays out more like an epilogue mostly for Woody. But it’s a damn good epilogue. I can't see any new Toy Story movies coming out for the foreseeable future but you never know with the House of Mouse. Maybe we get post-apocalyptic Toy Story 2077 in the future but as it stands it’s a good ending, maybe not as good as Toy Story 3 but good nonetheless.
